Protagonist and narrator. Grows up in a nomadic, impoverished family, suffers severe burns as a child, and later becomes a successful gossip columnist in New York. She struggles with her parents' dysfunction, temporarily disowns Rex, divorces David, and ultimately reconciles with him before his death, becoming a freelance writer.
