The miserly father and central figure of the story. A former mayor who accumulated vast wealth through shrewd investments and extreme parsimony. He locks his daughter in her room for giving away her gold coins to Charles, only relenting when warned that her inheritance would bypass him upon their mother's death. He manipulates Eugénie into signing over her rights and dies leaving her a fortune.
