Protagonist and illegitimate daughter of a monk and a cook. Initially sent to a convent and later employed as a reader by Madame de la Garde before becoming a courtesan. She catches the attention of King Louis XV, becomes the first lady at Versailles, and is eventually expelled after the king's death. Betrayed post-Revolution, she is executed in 1793.
