The Austrian ruler and uncle of Bertha who imposes harsh occupation on Switzerland. He installs the tyrannical Gessler as bailiff, manipulates Bertha to control Rudenz, and orders military reinforcements to crush the Swiss uprising. His reign ends when Bertha assassinates him in his bed, inadvertently triggering a larger conflict.
