Peter's mother, widowed and living under the oppressive Nazi regime. She faces harassment from a Blockleiter and questioning by Gestapo officer Herr Knopp regarding her late husband's suspected communist ties. Her relationship with Knopp becomes a leverage point that forces Peter into the Hitler Youth.
