Idomeneo's son and heir, Idamante loves Ilia and releases the Trojan captives to celebrate the prospect of peace. Unaware at first of his father's vow, he is bewildered by Idomeneo's rejection, then fights Poseidon's monster and returns victorious. Once he understands the sacrifice demanded of his father, he willingly offers himself, but Poseidon saves him and names him and Ilia as successors.
