Bernard de Mauprat is Edmée’s cousin and begins as a member of the outlaw group occupying the Rock of Mauprat. He helps Edmée escape, is taken into custody, and is later raised as a gentleman. After leaving to join the army, he returns to rebuild the family estate, but is falsely accused of shooting Edmée.
