Abedi Kasongo is the hired driver accompanying Joshua French and Tjostolv Moland on their journey through the Congo. He is found dead, making his death the central event behind the Norwegians’ interrogation, imprisonment, and trial. French disputes who caused the killing, claiming that a Congolese army ambush led to the civilian’s death while he accepted responsibility for the wider incident.
