Alex is Pau’s brother, whose death sets the story in motion. Though he is already cremated before Pau can identify him, Pau travels to the village where Alex had lived and pieces together fragments of his life. He had been a capable seaman, left the boat about a year earlier, and had been staying in the Pyrenees; the circumstances of his death remain unexplained.
