Phâl is a former soldier who comes to Phnom Penh with Savannah and Maly after years fighting the Khmer Rouge. Wounded in the war, he can no longer return to farm work and, like his companions, has little money. His injury shows how the former soldiers’ struggles continue in peacetime, while his connection to Savannah and Maly places him among the people trying to survive together.
