Slimane is Daru's old friend from his infantry days and now a member of the Algerian rebellion. After rebels capture Daru and Mohamed, Slimane recognizes Daru, frees both men's hands, and later urges Daru to decide whether he supports or opposes the rebellion. He survives the French attack on the rebel camp.
