A young man sent from his lakeside home to Vienna after his mother can no longer support him. He works for Otto Trsnjek in the tobacconist’s shop, becomes involved with Anezka, and turns to Sigmund Freud for guidance. As Nazi rule tightens, he is threatened and beaten for trying to help Otto, but refuses to abandon the shop or forget his employer.
Franz is the central character, a poor young man from the Austrian mountains who joins the army by presenting himself as a locksmith. During the war, he cares for a wounded fox, becomes detached from his unit after taking a pill, and is imprisoned after being accused of abandoning his military duties.
