The daughter of a railwayman, Paola leaves her home in Abruzzo for Rome, where she first works for a dressmaker and later turns to high-end prostitution. After meeting Giovanni, she resolves to return home and see her sister Anna, but faces rejection, harassment, and coercion there. In despair, she throws herself from a railway bridge.
