Elmo is the central character of the special. With help from his father, Louie, he has a virtual playdate with friends over video conferencing and figures out new ways to play together while social distancing limits in-person contact.
Elmo works with Abby, Rosita, and Grover to find the missing street sign before Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s planned photo, while keeping the problem secret from him. He also performs “I Remember” with Abby, Grover, and Zoe, and “Count Me In” with Abby during the celebration.
Elmo joins his friends for story time and helps lead the search when a bird steals Abby's magical wand. He takes control of the hot-air balloon while Abby follows the thief, guiding their journey through different neighborhoods. He also appears in the later knight story, where he joins Abby and a friend on a quest.
Elmo is the young monster at the center of the story his father tells about Sesame Street's past. After moving there with his father, he faces an unfriendly neighborhood but tries to bring people together with decorations, song, and kindness. His effort helps the residents begin treating one another warmly.
Elmo is eager to meet the frightened puppy and, with Grover's guidance, approaches her gently and sings to reassure her. He helps her on the journey to the pet fair, then realizes he loves her and asks his parents to let her join their family, promising to care for her.
