The protagonist's father. After the turmoil of Kristallnacht and the murder of his daughter, he decides the family will move from Nazi Germany to his birthplace, Łódź in Poland, believing it will be safer there. He and his wife are later imprisoned in the Łódź Ghetto, and he dies when the ghetto is liquidated.
