Young Matthew Copping is Roland Copping's brother in the opening childhood sequence. After Roland rolls the dice and sends their raft down the river, Young Matthew jumps onto an overhead crane, but slips from Mother's grasp and falls over the waterfall. This accident is the origin of the injuries and emotional trauma associated with Matthew's adult condition.
