Roger is Hester's husband, a bent old man who returns and is admitted to her prison cell as a physician. He threatens to expose her hidden lover and later cares for the ailing Arthur Dimmesdale. After seeing the scarlet A on Arthur's chest, he watches Hester and Arthur together and alerts the town against her.
