Sam is an actor Buck casts in the lead role of his play, “Hank and Frank and the Witch.” Buck chooses him because he strongly resembles Chuck, making the casting part of Buck's indirect plea for Chuck's love. The plot describes Sam as talentless, and his role connects Buck's theatrical project to his fixation on his childhood friend.
