Sergeant Deadhead / Sergeant Donovan (played by Frankie Avalon) is a protagonist in Sergeant Deadhead.
A clumsy soldier who accidentally blasts into space in a rocket with a chimpanzee. Upon returning, he gains a massive ego and chimp-like mannerisms. He repeatedly switches places with his lookalike, Sergeant Donovan, to avoid guardhouse confinement and enjoy his honeymoon with Airman Turner. Airman Lucy Turner (played by Deborah Walley) appears in Sergeant Deadhead.
Deadhead's fiancée who struggles with his constant disciplinary troubles. She agrees to marry him while he is imprisoned but later enjoys their honeymoon and a meeting with the President after Deadhead escapes confinement. She mistakenly chases away officials thinking they are her fiancé. General Fogg (played by Fred Clark) appears in Sergeant Deadhead.
A military officer who covers up Deadhead's unauthorized spaceflight by claiming he volunteered. He orchestrates a public wedding for Deadhead and Turner, mistakenly escorts Deadhead to meet the President, and ultimately ends up back in the guardhouse after the chaotic events. Captain Weiskopf (played by Gale Gordon) appears in Sergeant Deadhead.
A naval officer who collaborates with General Fogg to rebrand Deadhead as a hero. He helps arrange the wedding, mistakenly escorts Deadhead to the presidential meeting, and is eventually sent to the guardhouse alongside Fogg after the mix-ups conclude. The President (played by Pat Buttram) appears in Sergeant Deadhead.
