Plot Progression

1. The Captive Who Escapes — Pict warriors destroy Pinnata Castra and capture Dias for interrogation. His escape prompts a Roman expedition into the northern wilderness.
2. The Legion Broken — Virilus leads the Ninth Legion into Etain's ambush and is captured. The remaining Romans form a desperate rescue party.
3. Blood Feeds the Pursuit — Virilus is killed after Thax murders Gorlacon's son. The Picts pursue the scattered Romans through rivers, camps, and forests.
4. A Brief Hidden Refuge — Arianne shelters Dias, Bothos, and Brick and conceals them from Etain. The Romans leave when they discover that Roman forces have withdrawn.
5. The Last Roman Stand — The survivors choose to defend an abandoned fort rather than continue fleeing. Etain and the remaining Pict warriors are defeated, but the return south brings further losses.
