Plot Analysis Summary
A determined investigation confronts technical failure, institutional resistance, and pressure to minimize the truth.
Story Structure — 5 Plot Phases
The Launch And Its Ruin
The Challenger launch is presented through television coverage and public excitement. The mission catastrophically fails 73 seconds after take-off, creating widespread demand for answers.
Key Events
-
Challenger Awaits Launch — Television coverage shows Challenger waiting on the launch pad with reports about its crew and teacher passenger.
Location: Launch Pad
-
Public Countdown Begins — The countdown proceeds while public excitement builds around the planned mission.
Location: Launch Site
-
Catastrophic Launch Failure — The mission ends in catastrophe 73 seconds after take-off.
Location: Launch Site
-
Demand For Answers — Millions of Americans demand an explanation for the disaster.
Location: United States
An Investigation Takes Shape
A commission is formed and persuades a celebrated physicist to participate. He insists on technical manuals and factory access so he can investigate the shuttle directly.
Key Events
-
Investigation Commission Forms — A commission is formed to investigate the shuttle disaster.
Location: Commission Hearing Room
-
Physicist Joins Inquiry — A celebrated physicist is persuaded to join the investigation.
Location: Commission Offices
-
Demand For Technical Access — The physicist requests technical manuals and access to the factory floor.
Location: Commission Offices
-
Factory Investigation — The physicist seeks to understand how the shuttle was built instead of relying on official summaries.
Location: Shuttle Factory Floor
-
Institutional Resistance — Incomplete information and institutional resistance frustrate the investigation.
Location: Commission Offices
Clues Beneath The Flame
A photograph reveals a flame beside the solid rocket booster, but the physicist distinguishes the visible effect from its underlying cause. Comparisons of launches and weather conditions direct attention toward the O-rings and joint design.
Key Events
-
Institutional Resistance — Incomplete information and institutional resistance frustrate the investigation.
Location: Commission Offices
-
Flame In Photograph — A photograph reveals a flame coming from the side of a solid rocket booster.
Location: Investigation Room
-
Effect Versus Cause — The physicist argues that the flame is an effect and asks which component cracked or separated.
Location: Investigation Room
-
Launch Comparison — Earlier successful launches are compared with the failed mission.
Location: Investigation Room
-
Cold Weather Variable — The cold launch day is examined as a variable distinguishing the failed mission.
Location: Investigation Room
-
O-Ring Focus — Attention focuses on the booster O-rings and the joint design.
Location: Investigation Room
Evidence Under Pressure
Missing data, absent camera angles, and the removal of a knowledgeable witness raise concerns about institutional and financial pressure. The failure of notes to reach Dr. Sally Ride deepens suspicion that the inquiry is being obstructed.
Key Events
-
Missing Timing Data — The investigation finds inadequate timing data and missing camera angles.
Location: Commission Offices
-
Contractor Warning Concern — The removal of a key contractor-warning witness suggests organizational and financial pressure.
Location: Commission Offices
-
Notes Fail To Arrive — The physicist's notes fail to reach Dr. Sally Ride, increasing suspicion that the work is being obstructed. Characters: Dr. Sally Ride
Location: Commission Offices
A Finding That Will Not Be Buried
The exhausted physicist reconstructs the joint failure and attributes it to design flaws, management failure, and freezing weather. At the final hearing, he presses the commission to take the evidence seriously despite apparent resistance.
Key Events
-
Failure Reconstruction — Despite illness and exhaustion, the physicist continues reconstructing the failure.
Location: Investigation Room
-
Seal Design Conclusion — The physicist concludes that joint rotation caused by burning propellant undermined the seal design.
Location: Investigation Room
-
Report Identifies Failures — The report identifies booster flaws, management failure, and freezing weather as central factors.
Location: Commission Offices
-
Final Hearing Resistance — The commission chairman appears ready to minimize or bury the physicist's conclusions.
Location: Final Hearing Room
-
Evidence Demanded — The physicist returns with his findings and demands that the evidence be taken seriously.
Location: Final Hearing Room
On the eve of the Challenger explosion in 1986 one engineer goes to the extreme to stop the launch. This hot-headed engineer makes a desperate race against the clock to call off the billion dollar multi-delayed Challenger launch, convinced the O-ring seals will fail and kill everyone on board. The Company, Marshall Space Flight and NASA made a business decision. He made a human decision.
