Ernest Holm is a determined father and farmer who remains in the drought-stricken region with Mary and Jerome, believing irrigation can restore the land. He earns water by delivering supplies to the water men, buys the robotic Sim after his mule dies, and is ultimately killed by Flem, who frames the machine for his death.
