Story Breakdown

The plot centers on the young mistress of the castle, Cornelia van Vestrum, who feels the blood of her ancestress, a kleptomaniac Roma, running through her veins. Like her ancestor, Cornelia must also steal. She is observed by the swindler Johannes van Gudry, who tries to blackmail her... In the meantime, Gudry has discovered a waitress who is the spitting image of Cornelia, who now resides as the mistress of the castle and whom he intends to marry.
