Plot Analysis Summary

A planetary disaster forces scientific detection, emergency coordination, sacrifice, and desperate rescue.

Story Structure — 5 Plot Phases

Fire Beneath the Sky

A meteoroid causes a tanker disaster near Billings, while Jack and Adam investigate the unexplained fire. The incident initially receives a misleading explanation.

Key Events

• Montana Meteoroid Impact — A meteoroid strikes before a tanker, causing a crash and massive fire. Location: Near Billings, Montana
• Fire Misreported — Authorities report the tanker fire as a lightning strike while the area is evacuated. Location: Montana
• Helicopter Inspection — Jack and Adam inspect the fire from a helicopter and rescue a stranded married couple. Characters: FEMA Director Jack Wallach, Adam Marquez Location: Montana fire zone
• National Observatory — Lily observes a comet approaching Earth near the Fourth of July. Characters: Dr. Lily McKee Location: Boulder, Colorado

The Orbital Warning

Lily studies a comet and discovers that Helios and Eros have been displaced into dangerous paths. She brings the threat to Jack and the emergency authorities.

Key Events

• Asteroids Detected — Lily studies photographs and identifies what she believes are asteroids. Characters: Dr. Lily McKee Location: National Observatory
• Helios And Eros Named — Lily explains that the comet disrupted Helios and Eros and that both may threaten Earth. Characters: FEMA Director Jack Wallach, Adam Marquez, Dr. Lily McKee Location: National Observatory
• Helios Threat Explained — Lily describes Helios's destructive force, extreme heat, and wide impact radius. Characters: FEMA Director Jack Wallach, Adam Marquez, Dr. Lily McKee Location: National Observatory
• Montana Fragment Identified — The Montana fire is linked to a smaller asteroid detected by the Mauna Kea observatory. Characters: Dr. Lily McKee Location: National Observatory
• Kansas City Targeted — Lily determines that Helios will hit Kansas City within forty-eight hours. Characters: FEMA Director Jack Wallach, Dr. Lily McKee Location: National Observatory

A City Under Water

Helios is projected to strike Kansas City, leading to an evacuation order. A fragment hits a dam, forcing Jack into a dangerous flood rescue.

Key Events

• Kansas City Targeted — Lily determines that Helios will hit Kansas City within forty-eight hours. Characters: FEMA Director Jack Wallach, Dr. Lily McKee Location: National Observatory
• Kansas City Evacuation — Lily and Jack inform the President, who orders Kansas City's evacuation. Characters: FEMA Director Jack Wallach, Dr. Lily McKee Location: Kansas City
• Dam Fragment Impact — A Helios fragment strikes a dam and sends floodwaters into the city. Characters: FEMA Director Jack Wallach Location: Kansas City
• Flood Rescue Drive — Jack drives into the flood to rescue two stranded firefighters and a drunk driver. Characters: FEMA Director Jack Wallach Location: Flooded Kansas City
• Eros Impact Confirmed — Lily informs Jack that Eros, not only Helios, is going to impact Earth. Characters: FEMA Director Jack Wallach, Dr. Lily McKee Location: Emergency response base

The Broken Defense

Military lasers attempt to destroy Eros, but the operation fractures it into numerous dangerous pieces. The apparent victory becomes a larger planetary emergency.

Key Events

• Eros Impact Confirmed — Lily informs Jack that Eros, not only Helios, is going to impact Earth. Characters: FEMA Director Jack Wallach, Dr. Lily McKee Location: Emergency response base
• Laser Interception Attempt — The military sends three laser-equipped jets to destroy Eros. Location: Airspace near Eros
• Hurricane Damages Laser — One laser is damaged when its aircraft takes off through a hurricane. Location: Hurricane airspace
• Eros Shattered — Two lasers appear to destroy Eros but actually break it into many deadly fragments. Location: Space near Earth

Searching Through Ruins

Dallas is devastated by the fragments, and Lily searches for her father and son. Jack ultimately reaches the crater and rescues the boy.

Key Events

• Dallas Devastated — Large Eros fragments strike Dallas, where Lily's father and son are located. Characters: Dr. Lily McKee Location: Dallas
• Adam Killed At Camp — Adam is killed by a refugee while addressing people at an evacuation camp. Characters: Adam Marquez Location: Evacuation camp
• Hospital Ruins Rescue — Lily locates her trapped father and helps nearby firemen rescue him from the hospital ruins. Characters: Dr. Lily McKee Location: Ruined Dallas hospital
• Crater Rescue — Lily finds her son in an impact crater, and Jack arrives by helicopter to rescue him. Characters: FEMA Director Jack Wallach, Dr. Lily McKee Location: Dallas impact crater
• Comet Passes Earth — The survivors watch the comet pass Earth and learn it will not return for four thousand years. Characters: FEMA Director Jack Wallach, Dr. Lily McKee Location: Emergency response base

Story Breakdown

• Montana Impact — The first unexplained impact establishes the danger before authorities understand its cause.
  • Tanker Disaster — A meteoroid strikes near a tanker, causing a crash and a massive fire.
  • Helicopter Inspection — Jack and Adam investigate the fire and rescue a stranded couple.
• Orbital Discovery — Lily's observations reveal that a passing comet has disrupted two asteroid orbits.
  • Comet Observation — Lily studies the comet approaching Earth near the Fourth of July.
  • Helios And Eros — Lily identifies two asteroids with potentially devastating impact consequences.
• Kansas City Threat — Helios becomes an immediate regional threat, prompting an evacuation and a dangerous flood response.
  • Evacuation Order — The President orders Kansas City to be evacuated after Lily's warning.
