Plot Progression

1. A Mission Under Threat — The Overland line is placed under new Union leadership because its gold shipments support the war effort. The return to Julesburg introduces Rod Miller and the hidden Confederate conspiracy.
2. The Saboteurs Organize — Rod faces humiliation and despair after losing an arm, while the conspiracy gains a violent instrument through Mace. Putnam chooses sabotage and theft instead of an immediate assassination.
3. Violence Escalates — The conspiracy's attack results in Rod being mistaken for the intended target and shot. Mace then commits a far more horrifying act by driving a stagecoach off a cliff.
4. The Town Draws Together — Mace's brutality fractures the conspirators' cooperation and prompts a final defense of the Overland cause. Putnam attempts to stop Mace before further killing occurs.
5. The Conspiracy Falls — Putnam is shot during the final confrontation, and Mace is killed afterward. With the conspiracy ended, the surviving characters face separate futures.
