Protagonist. An energetic girl raised in the Swiss Alps by her grandfather, she is taken to Frankfurt against her will. Despite initial friction with the governess, she befriends the wheelchair-bound Klara Sesemann and miraculously helps her walk. Overcome by severe homesickness and sleepwalking, she is eventually allowed to return to her mountain home, ultimately helping reconcile her grandfather with the village.
