Protagonist. An energetic girl raised in the Swiss Alps by her grandfather, she is taken to Frankfurt against her will. Despite initial friction with the governess, she befriends the wheelchair-bound Klara Sesemann and miraculously helps her walk. Overcome by severe homesickness and sleepwalking, she is eventually allowed to return to her mountain home, ultimately helping reconcile her grandfather with the village.
Heidi is a spirited girl who lives with her grandfather in the Swiss Alps and is close to Geissenpeter. Taken to Frankfurt to keep Klara company, she befriends and cares for her, but becomes deeply homesick. After returning to the mountains, she helps Geissenpeter learn to read and welcomes Klara for a visit, supporting her as she regains confidence and strength.
