A struggling San Francisco reporter who travels to Chestnut Hills to investigate a series of closet murders. He teams up with local biology teacher Diane Bennett and Sheriff Ketchem to track the creature. After surviving encounters with the monster and attempting to communicate with it, Richard is taken to the Transamerica Pyramid by the creature, which falls in love with him, ultimately leading to the monster's demise.
Richard initially approaches the creature as a journalist seeking the truth behind the closet murders.
