Despite his wife Eadie's pleas to flee or cooperate with the police, he initially refuses due to terror of mob retaliation. After Eadie is murdered by an assassin, Joey overcomes his fear, testifies against Louis "Lepke" Buchalter, and helps secure Lepke's execution.
