The landlady of the Dodson boarding house and mother to Alva, Willie, and others. She actively manipulates her daughters' futures for financial security, arranging for Alva to accompany Mr. Johnson to Memphis and deceiving Owen about Alva's intentions. She later travels to New Orleans to exploit Alva but ultimately abandons her, leaving Willie alone.
