Lead geologist and expedition leader who discovers a coded book by Arne Saknussemm. He organizes the journey to the Earth's center, discovers an underground ocean and prehistoric creatures, stubbornly attempts to push through dead ends, and ultimately escapes via a volcanic eruption. Decades later, he continues searching old bookshops for more clues.
