Protagonist and Copenhagen policeman temporarily stationed in Skarrild after a psychological breakdown. Initially seeks a quick transfer to reunite with his daughter, but becomes entangled in the village's secretive justice system. He accidentally causes Ingelise Buhl's death, covers it up under the doctor's coercion, later kills her abusive husband Jørgen, and is ultimately blackmailed by the local elite to remain in town as their enforcer.
