A starving Siberian peasant initially recruited by Countess Tatiana to pose as her husband. He exhibits deep loyalty, enduring beatings and hospitalization to protect her. After recovering, he becomes a servant at the Gaidaroff mansion, where resentment grows under the gatekeeper Ivan's influence. He later traps Ivan in the cellar, confronts Tatiana, and is spared by Dmitri. Ultimately, he sacrifices his life strangling Ivan to defend Tatiana, dying with a smile as she reunites with Dmitri.
