A brilliant biology student sent to Antarctica for six months to study a penguin colony. Initially motivated to impress a girl, he stays in Shackleton's Hut and faces a mental challenge from skuas preying on penguin eggs and chicks. He builds a catapult to fight them but fails, learning to observe rather than interfere with nature. The expedition transforms him into a changed man with a completely new outlook on life.
