Betty Brown, a woman of a lower social class than Lt. Somerville, enters a brief affair with him in 1893. She refuses marriage due to class barriers, conceals her pregnancy, and raises son Albert alone. She keeps his heirloom watch, which later becomes the key to revealing the tragic connection between the two captains.
