Anna's older, emotionally distant husband. After discovering her passionate affair with Vronsky and her scandalous public behavior at a race, he formally severs ties with her. He refuses her requests to see their son Sergei, stating her death would be preferable to the social dishonor she brings. He dies three years later, after which Anna visits their son daily.
