Russian cavalry captain and Grand Duke's aide-de-camp. He meets Anna at an inn, later rekindles a passionate affair with her. His public display at a horse race leads to Anna's exile. He accompanies her to Italy, returns to Russia, and suffers separation when the Grand Duke forces them apart. He desperately searches for her for three years before they reunite.
