One of the two main protagonists conscripted in 1939. He and Max attempt to flee the war, impersonate German and French officers, escape to England to join the Free French Forces, serve as secret agents in Syria, get captured, and eventually navigate occupied France while working for conflicting resistance and propaganda groups.
