A post-Civil War preacher who arrives in Walesburg and initially uses guns to silence a rowdy saloon crowd. He builds a congregation, marries Harriet, and raises her nephew John. Though his faith is tested during a typhoid outbreak blamed on him, he is later vindicated and reconciles with the local doctor. He courageously faces a KKK lynch mob to protect a Black landowner, shaming them with moral appeals.
