A superstitious Māori man who believes he is a Mexican bandit and that a river monster called a Taniwha haunts the area. He befriends Wes, Cyril, and Don after they wash ashore. He uses dynamite to distract Bishop and Cray, replaces cash with explosives to kill Bishop, and rescues Wes's gambling winnings, only to throw them into the river after mistaking a burning raft for the Taniwha.
