Central protagonist. A middle-aged woman whose husband is deported to a concentration camp. She becomes a crucial partisan relay and courier, operating clandestinely to supply the Resistance. After killing a German soldier in retaliation for killing her cat, she adopts the alias mother Agnese to hide among civilians. She disobeys orders to shelter partisans and is ultimately executed after being recognized by the officer she previously wounded.
