A war orphan who adopts a childlike, joy-driven philosophy to survive in a bleak, war-torn city. He initially initiates a romantic relationship with Marta, but sacrifices his freedom by getting himself jailed to foster her bond with Andrej. After returning from prison, he loses his spirited 'foolishness' and, consumed by jealousy over Marta and Andrej's relationship, murders them both before committing suicide.
