An orphaned boy who idolizes samurai and follows Genpachi for a time. After witnessing the violence and tragedy surrounding his masters, Genpachi dismisses him with a warning to never pursue the path of a samurai.
Genpachi becomes an unwilling example and ultimately rejects Jirō's samurai ideal.
Jirō follows Genpachi because he wants to become a samurai. At the end, Genpachi sends him away and tells him never to become one.
