A Wyoming rancher who recently sold his Texas Longhorn herd and carries a cashier's check. He devises a plan to breed Longhorns with Herefords and leads an arduous cattle drive to Oregon to acquire the new stock. He shows strong leadership by walking miles to save his injured cowhand Andy, refuses to butcher the breeding cattle for food, and ultimately rewards Andy's loyalty before successfully returning to his ranch.
