The central antagonist and titular mad monk. Initially a controversial healer in the countryside, he manipulates his way into the Russian royal court. He uses hypnosis and sexual manipulation to control the Tsarina, orchestrate an injury to Tsarvitch, and install Dr. Zargo as court physician. His ruthless pursuit of power leads to his downfall when a conspiracy by Ivan, Peter, and Zargo ultimately results in him being thrown from a window.
