Sent to the Dar Al-Tifel Institute in 1978 at age 5 after her mother's death. Raised within its walls, she remains sheltered until age 15 when assigned to teach at a refugee camp, awakening her to Palestinian realities. She falls for a militant and becomes torn between supporting the First Intifada and following the Institute's philosophy that education is the true path to peace.
