Rent-a-Girlfriend: Season 1

Kazuya Kinoshita is a college student who is dumped by his girlfriend Mami Nanami after a month of dating. To cure his depression, he rents a girlfriend named Chizuru Mizuhara, but is dissatisfied by how inauthentic she acts. Their second date consists of him calling her out, which leads to her revealing her true colors. Kazuya is then called to the hospital due to his grandmother getting hospitalized once again, and Kazuya's family is shocked to see his new "girlfriend" with him upon visiting.

Chizuru runs away after she and Kazuya encounter each other. Once the coast is clear, she tells him to not say anything. The next morning, they find out they live next door at their apartment complex. After Kazuya receives a call from his grandmother, he begs Chizuru to help him out, but she refuses. When Kazuya's grandmother comes over to his apartment, she is disappointed Chizuru has not shown up. When Chizuru hears this, she arrives with a cooked meal. Afterward, Chizuru agrees to be Kazuya's

Exhausted due to Ruka's clinginess, Kazuya decides to book Chizuru for Christmas Eve, but her schedule is marked as busy. On Christmas Eve, he fortuitously sees her with an attractive guy named Umi, and stalks them while getting exponentially more upset. Later that night, Kazuya is finally spotted by Chizuru, who reveals she works as a rental girlfriend to practice acting and clears up the misconceptions he has about her and Umi. She then gives Kazuya a phone case as a Christmas present.

Kazuya is working part-time at a karaoke bar. It is then revealed what happened after Christmas Eve. While on a date with Chizuru, she point blank asked him if he had feelings for her, which he reluctantly denied. Afterward, they ran into Ruka, who left with Kazuya. When he questions why she is a rental girlfriend, she uses hand signals to reveal her answer. Sumi later thanks Kazuya after he stopped her from getting harassed. Kazuya agrees to go on a date with Ruka. Later at their job, just as he is about to ask her to be his girlfriend, he spots Mami and Chizuru heading into one of the rooms. Mami attempts to pay Chizuru, but she refuses. Mami then reveals how long she has known about Chizuru's occupation. Meanwhile, Kazuya finds out that Mami knows the true nature of his and Chizuru's relationship. Once they leave, he fakes an illness so he can follow them. As Mizuhara looks set to quit the rental girlfriend business, Kazuya goes to watch a play, one that could be pivotal to their relationship.

As the fallout from the play becomes clear, things go back to normal between Mizuhara and Kazuya, until...?

Mizuhara has lost the key to her apartment and comes to Kazuya for some reason... and she's not the only unexpected visitor!

Kazuya has barely dealt with the aftermath of Mami's visit when he gets another aggressive visitor!

Kazuya tries to clear the misunderstanding Chizuru is under, all while enlisting Sumi's help to get her a fitting birthday present.

As Kazuya wonders if his birthday gift was good enough, he and Chizuru find themselves in a crisis in the form of a boozer.

Kazuya wakes up with the worst hangover ever and struggles with his fragmented memories. Meanwhile, someone finds out about his workplace and decides to make an appearance.

Kazuya decides to spend his all-day date with Mizuhara reclaiming his lost youth... in a very peculiar fashion.

When Nagomi hears that Chizuru's birthday has already passed, she decides to throw a combined party for both her and Kazuya, and she refuses to take no for an answer!

Kazuya can barely process Ruka's actions when Nagomi decides to drop another bomb on the party.

Kazuya has hardly begun to process the fallout from his birthday when he gets asked to go on another practice date with Sumi, this time with her taking the lead!

Chizuru reflects on her journey to get her here, and Kazuya acts on his idea to help her.

Kazuya and Chizuru have decided to make a movie together so that Granny Sayuri can see it. That's all well and good, but now they have to sit down and work out all the details.

Ruka demands an explanation from Kazuya and Chizuru, and Mini overhears it all going down! What will she do with this information?

With the momentum of the crowdfunding campaign stalling, Kazuya must turn to Mini, who happens to be an expert on the matter!

Mini's earnest appeal makes things awkward. Meanwhile, Umi makes a request in return for retweeting the campaign.

Filming for the movie begins, and seeing her act in the flesh, Kazuya realizes that Chizuru exists in a whole different dimension from him. Meanwhile, Mini is hatching a plot of her own.

Kazuya and Chizuru end up at a ski resort, finding themselves having to shoot the final scene for the movie all on their own. Chizuru decides she has something to say to Kazuya.
