A woman who arrives in San Francisco to marry a gold owner, only to find him murdered. She becomes the protégée of casino owner Luis Chamalis, taking the alias Swan. Though she initially participates in rigged gambling, she grows disillusioned with his violent control. After meeting poet Jim Carmichael, she falls in love, secretly rigs the roulette wheel to help him win, and ultimately chooses to flee with him, rejecting Chamalis dominance.
