A retired colonel who arrives in San Francisco with Mary Rutledge. He funds a printing press to establish a respectable newspaper, publishing articles that expose Chamalis crimes and the Bella Donna rigged gambling. Despite threats to burn his press, he continues his campaign, eventually posting a warning flyer that leads to his assassination by Chamalis henchman. His martyrdom galvanizes the vigilantes.
