The ruthless owner of the Bella Donna gambling house. He exerts destructive control over San Francisco underworld and is suspected of murdering Mary fiancé. He initially takes Mary under his wing, but their relationship sours as she grows rebellious. Violent and possessive, he orders murders, threatens a journalist, and eventually shoots Carmichael. Ultimately, he yields to Mary plea and surrenders to the arriving sheriff and mob.
